Replacing an existing caravan/motorhome roof vent/skylight is relatively simple DIY task. Most roof vents/skylights will unscrew from inside the caravan or motorhome and once all the screws are out the inside part will separate from the outside part. A scraper may be needed to prise off the outside part and break the bond between the sealant and the caravan/motorhome roof. All remnants of the old sealant should be removed by carefully using the scraper and/or white spirit. A flexible non-setting sealant such as mastic strip or Carafax should be applied around the aperture and the new roof vent/skylight fitted to the caravan/motorhome roof. Once the installation is complete any excess sealant should be trimmed from around the area of the roof vent/skylight and the job neatly finished off and waterproofed using a top quality sealant such as Sikaflex to prevent any danger of damp or water ingress.
Remember when determining the size of a replacement roof vent/skylight it is the size of the aperture (i.e. the hole in the roof) and NOT the frame of the existing roof vent/skylight that should be measured.
