Monitor and keep control of your 12 volt and mains power supplies with these top quality control panels and battery chargers.
Leisure battery chargers are also often referred to as 12 volt power supply units and some people may think that if your camping plans are to be always on mains hook-up then there's no need for a leisure battery in the system. In theory it's possible, but in reality a leisure battery should always be fitted in order to stabilise the 12 volt electrical system.
You may think any old battery charger will do for your caravan, motorhome, RV or boat's 12 volt electrical system, but this is not the case. If you were to use a standard, stand alone battery charger (i.e. a charger used for charging up your car battery when it goes flat) you would run the risk of damaging your leisure/marine vehicle or craft's 12v electrics. Conventional car battery chargers sometimes raise the battery voltage as high as 14.8 volts (to clear sulphation from the battery plates), whereas an on-board leisure battery charger probably won't charge the battery much more than 13.6 volts. If the voltage is too high (i.e. 14.8 volts and not 13.6 volts) there is a strong possibility of component failure in your caravan, motorhome, RV or boat's 12 volt electrical system.
As the leisure/marine battery/batteries in your caravan, motorhome or boat will only reach maximum 13.6 volts if left permanently connected to the on-board leisure battery charger/power supply the battery plates will become corroded/sulphated thus causing a decrease in battery performance. That is why to keep your battery's performance to 100% you should use both types of battery charger. The ideal way to keep your leisure or marine batteries in tip-top condition, especially where the battery/batteries are left idle for long periods, would be to periodically charge the leisure battery/batteries on a good quality, stand alone charger and thus keeping them at peak performance. The one thing you must never do with lead-acid batteries is to leave them in a flat/discharged condition as this will cause them to become sulphated and inevitably ruin the battery as they will not be able to be recharged, even if they are nearly new!
